Dental checkups are one of the most important parts of keeping your smile in good condition. Visiting your dentist twice per year allows them to keep an eye on your oral health and offer you tips on how to better care for your smile at home. During your biannual dental visits, there are several things that you can do to make the process easier for both yourself and your dental team. Continue reading to learn about four of them!

Tip #1: Figure Out Your Financials

Most dental insurance plans cover two preventive treatments per year. Dental insurance also offers partial coverage for restorative and emergency treatments. But, if you don’t have insurance, it’s important to know how you’re going to pay for treatment before you attend your appointment.

Many dental practices offer financing through companies like CareCredit. This only takes a few minutes to sign up for and allows you to make flexible payments with little to no interest rather than paying for the entire treatment upfront.

Tip #2: Make Sure to Brush and Floss

Though they are aware of how important it is to brush twice and floss once daily, many people don’t start focusing on it until they’re getting ready to see their dentist. If you just started taking care of your smile, your oral health professional will be able to tell.

It’s important to spend two minutes in the morning and again at night brushing your teeth. Use toothpaste that contains fluoride to strengthen your smile as well as a toothbrush with soft bristles to avoid damage. Additionally, consider looking up the right way to floss to ensure you’re removing as much plaque as possible. This will save you time and money on dental treatments.

Tip #3: It’s Polite to Be on Time

Dentists have incredibly busy schedules. From performing preventive dental checkups to restorative and cosmetic treatments, there is a lot that goes into their day. For his reason, be sure to be on time to your appointment. It shows that you respect their time, and it will also allow you to get in and out of your appointment quicker.

Additionally, arrive at least 10 to 20 minutes early if you are a new patient. This will give you time to fill out paperwork without having to cut into your appointment time.

Tip #4: Provide an Update on Your Status and Ask Questions

The last time you saw your dentist, did you have any ongoing oral health issues? If so, make sure to provide them with an update. Additionally, if you have diabetes or any other overall health conditions that may affect your smile, let them know. This will allow them to make adjustments to your treatment to better accommodate your condition.
